The boys are back! SoCal darlings Local Natives have shared “April,” the lead single from their forthcoming album But I’ll Wait For You, which arrives rather fittingly this spring. The band has presented the record as a companion piece and the second half of Time Will Wait For No One. In anticipation of its release they previously announced a U.S. tour which includes a date at BeachLife 2024 in May.

True to its title “April” finds Local Natives embracing a revitalizing weightlessness. Guided by their ability to transform the very sunbeams into melodic splendor, the single unfolds as a flurry of buoyant tones. From the riveting grumble of guitars and giddy percussion to their still spellbinding vocal harmonies. No one writes a love song like them — lending every pang of sad yearning and gleaming adoration the richly euphonious fulfillment it deserves.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Local Natives track if it didn’t slyly allude to some L.A. landmark with lofty wonder. “I remember you climbed on my shoulders / Naming the lions on Figueroa,” Taylor Rice and Kelcey Ayer sing, exchanging lovelorn memories. “You’re on my mind, I won’t let go / Oh, there’s one more episode.”

“April” is completed by a music video directed by Jonathan Chu and filmed downtown at Pershing Square. As the camera pans from a birds-eye view of the streets and nearby rooftops, we are gifted stunning shots of the urban vistas and hues of sunset. The film follows the band as they search earnestly for one of their members — Ryan Hahn — who sits watching the other four as they scour the city. Ending in a hilarious but committed dance routine, the film captures with levity the affection and camaraderie that bond them together.

The band said of the new album: “But I’ll Wait For You is the second half of a large body of music we made together, the first half we shared last year with Time Will Wait For No One. It’s a companion piece. A sister album. Maybe not an answer to a question, but an exhale to an inhale. So little is in our control, but among all this chaos we can choose to be there for each other.”
